Prince would have been proud. Pantone recently announced their colour of the year for 2018 as ultra violet – a vivid purple.
"A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, PANTONE 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future," Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute said.
“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.”
The Institute said the rich hue is inspired by galaxies and exploration.
It said that in the home we will see it in rich velvet through the winter and then more vibrant accessories and floral prints going in to the summer.
It also compliments bright pinks and the jungle greens of recent years.
Australian furniture supplier Satara said Australian interiors are well placed to embrace this enigmatic color as it complements our already established color pallettes.
“Our love of all things Scandi, where pale and dark greys dominate, provide a visually lovely base for ultra violet.
“In many of our homes, where Black is the new Black, ultra violet aesthetically works in well.
“And for those who favour a coastally inspired white and timber color scheme, ultra violet can be introduced here too without visually unbalancing the space.”
Satara suggested introducing violet as subtle highlights such as violet dining chairs with timber tables, scatter cushions to grey sofas, or introducing an ultra violet pop to established pale and bolder pink bedrooms or interiors.
This shade can also be partnered with pale and darker blues to stunning effect.
It suggested using Jacaranda trees as an inspirations, with their purple flowers against the greyish green leaves and mid to dark timber trunks.
