A HUMPBACK whale and calf called into Newcastle Harbour this morning providing a rare spectacle for Novocastrians.
Dan Bunt, senior deckhand on the Stockton ferry filmed the mighty mammals as they cruised the local area.
"About 10.30am, the harbourmaster came over and said there was whale and calf between on the Stockton side of the harbour between channel markers three and four," Mr Bunt said.
It went down the way Steelworks channel a couple of hundred metres, then over to the proposed cruise terminal and then over to Dyke Point and then back out the entrance.
"It would have been in the harbour 45 minutes all up,β he said.
Mr Bunt has worked on the ferry for more than 20 years and it's the third time he's seen whales in the harbour.
"It's rare but not unknown," Mr Bunt said.
"They're migrating south at the moment and might have got a bit off track."
