The international trend of taking daredevil selfies is catching on in Melbourne with two teenagers posting a video on Instagram after breaking into the Eureka Tower.
Uploaded on August 29, the heart-stopping video shows the boys making their way to the top of the 91 floors, sitting right at the ledge to contemplate the views from the city's tallest building.
The boys, whose identities remain hidden, told Channel 7 they were not vandals.
"All we do is take photos," they said. "It was pretty awesome. It was good experience, good views."
Calling themselves theverticalsystem, they said they had no difficulty walking into the 297.3-metre private skyscraper.
"It was pretty easy," they said. "We went up three times and we weren't seen."
The 14- and 15-year-olds' Instagram account has 867 followers and 92 posts. The post received 152 likes.
They told Channel 7 their parents knew what they were doing but trusted them.
In September, the Sydney Morning Herald reported that more people died in 2014 from selfies than from shark attacks.
Earlier, Russian police launched a campaign urging people to take safer selfies after a 21-year-old shot herself in the head in May while taking a selfie while holding a pistol.
Wikipedia even maintains a page with a list of selfie-related injuries and deaths.
Meanwhile, the Eureka Tower thrillseekers said their stunts were dangerous but they were always careful.
"If you fall, you will die," they said. "There is a line that you can cross; once you cross that line, it starts to become very dangerous."
