Dog owners have been warned to be on the lookout for signs of liver disease in their pets if they feed them raw beef after at least 10 dog deaths in Gippsland and Frankston in Victoria linked to fresh and frozen raw meat sourced from Gippsland.
It is believed the meat is sold in at least one Ballarat retail outlet.
The warning comes as Agriculture Victoria is supporting a PrimeSafe investigation into a cluster of dogs affected with severe liver disease who were fed fresh or frozen raw pet food bought between May 31 and July 3.
Victoria's chief veterinary officer Dr Graeme Cooke said dog owners should look out for a sudden loss of appetite, lethargy and jaundice in a dog that was previously healthy.
More than 50 dogs are believed to have become unwell with severe liver disease.

In a Facebook post last week, Smythesdale Veterinary Clinic said the knackery where the suspect meat was supplied from sold to a retail outlet in Ballarat, but they had no more specific information.
"If you are feeding raw beef to your dog it is important to stop until further information is received from Agriculture Victoria," they said.
