Northern beaches theft: Narrabeen frogs stolen in overnight raid

Well, hopefully two big ones actually, and Narrabeen woman Jill Bruce is calling for your help.

For the past 70 years two large, concrete frog statues have stood guard outside her house on Albert Street, that was until recently when they were stolen in an overnight amphibian raid.

Not only were the pair of heavy states taken, but "two ugly, cheap, white plaster Chinese yoga frogs had been left in their place".

"I know it's not end of the world stuff, but I'd like them back," Mrs Bruce said.

The original frogs were so well known on the street that when Mrs Bruce had her house demolished back in 1997 and the frogs were put away for safekeeping, many neighbours exclaimed "Where are the frogs, they are part of the street!"

When her newly constructed duplex was completed, named Green Frog Mews in honour of the well-known frogs, she popped the froggy statues back on show out the front.

The statues were stolen overnight on June 1 and since then Mrs Bruce has placed a sign at her letterbox calling for the frogs' return and has also searched to buy replacements with no luck.

"I've searched for new ones and there's nothing out there because they're old fashioned and probably made at someone's home," she said.

"I'm very disappointed in humans, everyone walks past and says hello and it's a really nice little street."

Mrs Bruce said she's been left dumbfounded by the "bizarre" frog napping and doesn't know why the heavy statues were moved.

"They're heavy concrete, they're really heavy. If we wanted to paint the drive you'd have to drag them out of the way," she said.

"Please bring them back and I'll give you your yoga frogs."

Mrs Bruce admits she's a bit of a frog fan and her house is filled with other nods to this animal.

"I'm very froggy, I've got wall hangings and all sorts of frog things," she said. "Frogs and the environment are sort of like the canary in the mine, it's a sign of things to come."
