Derelle Avery's first foray into futsal has led to an Australian call-up. The Bossley Park High School student captained the NSW Sydney Sydney Futsal Association under-13 team to the title at the recent National Club Futsal Championships.
The Fairfield resident scored a goal in the final to help NSW defeat ACT 4-2. She was also a member of the under-14s NSW team that lost in the final to ACT 4-3.
She was rewarded for her effort on the court with selection in the Australian team that is scheduled to tour New Caledonia.
"It was exciting to get the email to say I made the Australian team," said Derelle, who plays in the Marconi under-14s team.
"Futsal is fast, intense and there is quicker ball movement. This is my first year playing futsal and it is helping improve my skills for outdoor soccer."
Fellow Bossley Park High School students Zachariah Mechhawi, Austin Villada, Alexander Sobbi were also selected for Australian teams that will play in New Zealand in November.
Zachariah was named the most valuable player of the under-13s grand final as NSW defeated ACT 4-3 in the final. He was also named in the All-Star team. The defender was also part of the under-14s team that lost to the ACT in the final.
Austin, 12 of Busby and Alexander, 12, of Edmondson Park were members of the under-12s NSW team that lost in the quarter finals.
