The NSW Police Force has launched a high-visibility policing operation ahead of Anzac Day this weekend.
A highly visible and mobile police operation will be in place on Sunday, April 25 2021 to ensure that Anzac Day events are conducted in line with current Public Health Orders, including marches and dawn services.
An exemption to the Public Health Order was issued to allow 10,000 people to participate in the Sydney CBD March.
Spectators must provide contact details via a QR Code and should maintain physical distancing. Those unable to physically distance are encouraged to wear a mask, including on public transport.
Outside of the Sydney CBD, a maximum of 5000 people (excluding spectators) can participate in an outdoor Anzac Day March or Dawn Service subject to the one person per two square metre rule.
Anzac Day march and service organisers must have a COVID-19 Safety Plan. Spectators are exempt from providing contact details but should maintain physical distancing.
Police and Emergency Services minister David Elliott said he was glad to see changes made to restrictions.
"Anzac Day is a significant event on the nation's calendar and while it is great that we can commemorate this year, remember that the day will look a little different," Mr Elliott said.
"Be aware that some events may have seating or spacing requirements or are open to ticket-holders only, like the Dawn Service in Martin Place.
"We are in a lucky position to host events and pay our respects to the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our country, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment."
RSL NSW President and Raby resident Ray James said residents could sommemrate the day in their own way.
"There's more than one way to commemorate on Anzac Day including attending a local service, staying at home to 'light up the dawn' at 6am or watching the ABC broadcast," he said.
Operation Commander, Acting Assistant Commissioner Rohan Cramsie reminded the public that there were many ways to safely and respectfully commemorate Anzac Day this year.
"While we are able to observe Anzac Day closer to 'normal' this year, it is important to remember we are still in a pandemic and should behave respectfully," said Acting Assistant Commissioner Cramsie.
"If you do not have a ticket to the Dawn Service in Martin Place, please do not travel to the city. The service, as well as the Sydney CBD March, will be broadcast live on television. If you do attend any events or venues, adhere to any COVID-safe plans in place."
"Remember the reasons for commemorating this day and honour the true Anzac spirit - look out for your mates, drink responsibly and celebrate in a safe, sensible and respectful way."
The police operation will involve general duties officers, assisted by specialist police, including the Public Order and Riot Squad, Operations Support Group, Mounted Unit, PolAir, Licensing Police, Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, and Police Transport Command, to ensure public safety, including physical distancing and contact tracing check-in processes.
While there is no limit on spectator numbers for the Sydney CBD March, QR codes will be provided for all spectators.
Veterans minister Geoff Lee said he was grateful people could gather for this year's Anzac Day.
"The way we have been able to work together to ensure commemorations, events and services are held during a pandemic is a reflection of the hard work and resilience of the people of NSW," Mr Lee said.
"I'm very grateful we can come together this year to pay tribute to our fallen soldiers, honour and pay our respects to veterans and to the servicemen and servicewomen who are still protecting our country."
With crowds gathering in the CBD, Howard Collins, Chief Operations Officer from Transport for NSW is advising the public to consider their travel options.
"Major roads will be closed, and special-event clearways will be in place throughout the Sydney CBD. Consider catching public transport or ride sharing if you are attending events, and if you have to drive around the CBD, plan ahead on Live Traffic and expect delays," said Mr Collins.
