Invermay seagulls found dead sparking Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment investigation

It follows a similar incident last month where a large number of seagulls were reported dead on Invermay's Home Point Parade.

A Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment spokesperson said no culls have been conducted in the area and no permits have been issued to reduce the overall silver gull population.

The spokesperson said they have collected a number of the dead birds, which are at various stages of decomposition, at the Goderich Street site for an autopsy.

"A permit is current in the area to use shooting as a method to disturb and disperse the silver gull flock and to disrupt breeding," they said.

"It has not been used since September 2020. A further 12 month permit has been issued for the destruction of eggs, nests and nestlings at the same location.

The spokesperson said they were aware of the nuisance this issue has caused for stakeholders and the department was working with them to develop a plan to manage the species in the area.
