Parents celebrate welcoming south west Sydney's first baby of 2021

2020 might have been a tough year for many - but Macarthur's Karmacharya family have started 2021 with a special bundle of joy.

Their baby boy, Viyan Karmacharya, has secured a place in history.

The bouncing newborn was the first baby born in a south western Sydney public hospital in 2021, coming into the world at 12:02am AEDT on January 1.

Viyan weighed in at 3.13 kilograms and was born with the assistance of doctors and midwives at Campbelltown Hospital.

His parents, Biva Shrestha Karmacharya and Hitesh Karmacharya, said little Viyan was doing well and settling into his new home.

"He was due on January 11. He did pick a very good time to arrive," Mrs Karmacharya said.

"It has been a wonderful memory we will cherish every year."

Mr Karmacharya said their five-year-old son Avhan was relishing his new role as big brother.

"He is very much excited as well as proud to be a big brother," he said.

"He thinks the baby is very cute and wants to hold and kiss him."

Campbelltown Hospital general manager Alison Derrett said Viyan's arrival was a wonderful way to start the year.

"Congratulations to the Karmacharya family," Ms Derrett said.

"Biva Shrestha and Hitesh are absolutely thrilled at the arrival of their little one."

The family will also receive the NSW Government's Baby Bundle, which is full of products to support the health, development and wellbeing of newborn babies.

The bag, valued at $300, includes essential items such as a sleeping bag, play and change mats, thermometers and a first aid kit.
