Councillor Paul Azzo said he was "honoured "to have been elected as deputy mayor of a "great city" like Fairfield.
Mr Azzo, who joined council in 2016, takes over from Peter Grippaudo following the completion of his 12-months in the role. He won a 7-4 vote against fellow Fairfield ward councillor Del Bennett at Tuesday night's council meeting.
"I was pleased and humbled to be able to obtain the confidence of the council to be able to hold this important role," he said.
"It's currently an exciting but also a challenging time for our community. There is much positive change with Council delivering tens of millions of dollars of improvements with the construction of new car parks, libraries, parks but also it's a time where many residents are doing it tough and I wanted to play a greater role in assisting the mayor and council to finish these projects and assist our community through these difficult times.
"I'm looking forward to assisting council finish the many projects underway across our city as I know they are bringing jobs and will improve the liveability of our city for our community."
Fairfield mayor Frank Carbone said: "Congratulations to deputy mayor Paul Azzo on being elected by council for the next 12-months and together with all councillors we look forward to deliver for the community. I would also like to thank outgoing deputy mayor Peter Grippaudo for his contribution over the past 12 months."
Councillor Grippaudo said it has been an "absolute privilege" to be the deputy mayor.
"2020 has not been an easy year, but our mayor, councillors and staff have worked extremely hard for our beautiful community," he said.
"Works have commenced on Dutton Lane Car Park in Cabramatta and Fairfield Library, most recently we opened Koonoona Park, works have continued at Fairfield Showground and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic our community has rallied together to support one another. I am so proud and privileged to have worked closely with our mayor and fellow councillors on these exciting projects.
"I would like to personally congratulate Paul Azzo on his appointment as deputy mayor. I have no doubt he will excel in his new role and work with our mayor and councillors in continuing to go above and beyond for the Fairfield city community."
