Police have charged a man after he was allegedly found to be in possession of a firearm in Fairfield yesterday.
About 8pm, officers from Fairfield City Police Area Command stopped a vehicle on Hamilton Road after concerns the driver may be in breach of current bail conditions.
Officers approached the vehicle and the driver, a man aged 37, signalled that he was unable to open his window.
Officers opened the driver's door and allegedly saw a homemade firearm sitting on his lap. He was arrested and removed from the car. A search of the vehicle allegedly uncovered a small amount of heroin.
He submitted to a roadside drug test that allegedly returned a positive result for methamphetamine.
He was taken to Fairfield Police Station where he was charged with possessing a unregistered firearm and possessing a prohibited drug.
He was refused bail and will appear in Fairfield Local Court today.
