WE may still be waiting our State of Origin this year but it seems there's another battle of the borders brewing.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says she's not budging on borders unless it's safe to do so. She said the criticism from political rivals about her stance was disingenuous given that Queenslanders were being kept safe from the virus and its economy was performing better than Victoria, NSW, Western Australia and Tasmania.
Palaszczuk should be kicking goals with Queensland recording zero new virus cases in the 24 hours to 9am on Friday, and only 25 active cases in the state.
However, there's a few commentators on the sidelines calling for the third umpire over the Premier's extension of special quarantine conditions to AFL executives ahead of the code's grand final which has been shifted from the MCG to Brisbane's Gabba.
About 400 AFL staff have booked out the entire RACV Royal Pines Resort Gold Coast, where they are reportedly able to play golf and "mingle in the pool".
Most people quarantining in Queensland are forbidden from leaving their hotel rooms.
Palaszczuk says whichever state had won the grand final hosting rights would have offered the same privileges to AFL staff.
"It's almost like we're be singled out because we've won it," she said.
Decision pending on that one.
Regardless of the direction of the dummy spit, parochialism isn't going to rain on the parade of Jimboomba Redbacks' Milan Wellington, Ryden Clarke and Hamish Carr.
Their grandfather Ern was Collingwood president in the 1970s and they have carried the torch into 2020 helping to secure the AFL grand final for Queensland.
COVID has been a game changer and maybe it is time the big events that bring us together be shared around.
Could the states bid for grand final hosting rights across all our major sporting codes?
We only need to look at the success of the AFL's Dreamtime match between Richmond and Essendon in Darwin in August as a testament to the benefits of sharing the sporting love beyond a code's loyal homeground fan base.
If these are the only borders we bust, then there's something in that for all of us.
