Fairfield's leisure centres and Fairfield Youth and Community Centre will close from noon today in line with state and federal government directives to close all non-essential services to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
Gyms and indoor sports venues were specifically listed as a non-essential services to be closed.
Fairfield mayor Frank Carbone said council will also close all of its community venues available for casual event hire.
"As a council we want to provide opportunities for the community to stay connected and engaged, both socially and through physical activity," he said.
"This must be done in accordance with the NSW Health and federal government's requirements, putting the health and safety of our residents first.
"Council will continue to review all of its services, following the advice and directives of the NSW and federal governments and NSW Health."
Mr Carbone said leisure centre members will have their "membership frozen" for the duration of the closure and will be contacted by the leisure centres with more information.
"We will keep the community updated on changes to council's services and we thank everyone for their understanding during this challenging time," he said.
