Lao and Thai communities raise $60,000 for RFS

Local Lao and Thai communities raised a record $60,000 for the NSW Rural Fire Service to help them in their fight against the ongoing bushfire crisis

Four Buddhist temples - Wat Phrayortkeo Lao Buddhist Temple (Edensor Park), Wat Xayaphoum (Green Valley), Wat Buddha Metta (St Johns Park) and Wat Buddhalavarn Forest Monastry and Meditation Centre (Wedderburn) - lead the appeal which saw donations from Lao, Thai and others communities in Sydney and overseas.

Bounchanh Saenphoumy, who was on the organising committee for the bushfire appeal, said they exceeded their original target of $10,000.

On Australia Day, a cheque was handed to Superintendent Brian Graham and Inspector Paul McGrath from the NSW Rural Fire Service Cumberland Zone at a ceremony at Lao Buddhist Temple in Edensor Park.

The ceremony were led by Venerable Thongsavanh Chanthathirath, the Abbot of Wat Prayortkeo and Venerable Khamphaeng Saenpraseut, the Abbot of Wat Buddhalavarn, Lao and Thai community elders and community organisation leaders.
