A century from No.6 batsman Matthew Hopkins helped St George recover to post 325 against winless Fairfield Liverpool on Saturday at Hurstville Oval.
At one stage the Saints were 2-5 and then 5-127 before Hopkins (106) and Peter Francis (57) swung the game in the hosts favour in the final session.
Spinners Arjun Nair (2-71), Param Uppal (2-66) and Matt Critchley (1-82) sent down 63 of the 96 overs in the smoke haze while also producing two run outs to keep the score in check.
At stumps, the visitors were 0-16 in their search for win No.1.
Meanwhile, Blacktown Mounties face a 300-plus chase of their own after Northern District posted 320 on day one at Mark Taylor Oval.
Eight of the first nine batsman for the home team reached 20 as Mounties struggled for regular breakthroughs. Hunar Verma (4-50) was the pick of the bowlers.
