Westfields Sports High School have returned to the summit of schoolboy rugby league in NSW with a 26-14 win against Patrician Brothers' College, Blacktown in the NRL Schoolboy Cup grand final on Wednesday.
For Westfields it is their third state title in four years after losing to the same opposition in the final last year. Patrician Brothers' also defeated the Fairfield West school 16-14 in the round stages.
However, led by player of the final and under-18s state player of the year Sione Fainu, the 2016 national champions turned the tide in the final after leading 14-4 at the break at Campbelltown Stadium.
Westfields crossed for five tries with Fainu, Gordon Chan Kum Tong and Logan Muir leading the way.
Westfields qualified for the final after emphatic victories against Erindale 52-18 in the quarter-finals and Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School 66-0 in the semi-finals.
The Wayne Lambkin-coached team will now play Queensland champions Kirwan State High in the national final on Wednesday, September 18.
Former students Jason Saab, Tommy Talau, Brandon Wakehamand Sean Keppie are also excelling on the field with all four making their NRL debuts this year.
