Westfields Sports win lucky 13th Bill Turner Trophy

Westfields Sports High School have won their fourth Bill Turner Trophy in five years with an emphatic performance in the national under-15 girls football tournament which concluded on Wednesday.

The school's 13th title was built on defence with the team conceding only one goal from their six knockout matches including racking up a combined score of 12-0 during the two-day finals series at Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility, Speers Point.

Bronte Connolly, who score a hat-trick in last year's final, replicated the same feat in this year's semi-final scoring three times in a blistering 9-0 win against Illawarra Sports. Zarlie Goldsworthy added a first half double of her own with at one point Westfields leading 3-0 after only six-minutes.

Bronte (one) and Zarlie (two) continued their goal scoring form in the final as Westfields enhanced their status as the most successful school in the tournament winning 3-0 against Hunter Sports.

Goalkeeper Emilija Vidakovic was named the player of the final for keeping consecutive clean sheets.

The Fairfield West school just fell short of winning the double this year with the defending champions Bill Turner Cup team finishing fourth after losing to Endeavour Sports (2-1) and Hunter Sports (2-1) in the final series. Ipswich Grammar School were crowned champions.

Around 850 school teams from NSW, QLD, ACT and Victoria competed in this year's tournament.
