Damaging winds have swept across south-west Sydney causing extensive damage.

Winds averaging 60 to 70km/h with peak gusts in excess of 90km/h hit the region on Friday afternoon with a tree falling on a car while waiting in the drive-through at KFC Wetherill Park.

Four people were injured and five cars were also damaged after a tree fallat Warwick Farm.

The Hume Highway was closed in both directions as crews attempt to clean up debris and clear the road after a large gumtree fell on five cars during the Friday afternoon commute home.

A woman is in a serious condition after being taken to Liverpool Hospital and three men remain stable.

Gusty winds are expected to remain across Sydney on Saturday before easing on Sunday.

No areas of NSW have a total fire ban on Saturday, but the northeast of the state and far south coast all sit in the very high fire danger range.
