AN Aboriginal flag fastened to a fence outside the Bendigo Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Fair has gone missing, prompting concerns it has been stolen.
Art fair curator Janet Bromley said the flag, which was on loan, disappeared from the former All Saints Cathedral at the intersection of Forest and MacKenzie streets on Wednesday.
It was reported to police, in case the flag was found somewhere it shouldn't be.
"I just think it's silliness," Ms Bromley said of the idea of someone stealing an Aboriginal flag.
"We don't want it to end up somewhere inappropriate."
The missing flag was one of two at the site. Another Aboriginal flag was up the flagpole.
Bendigo NAIDOC executive committee member and Medal of the Order of Australia recipient Anne Conway said it was disheartening and a little frightening to think the flag could have been stolen.
"We don't know the motive. It could have been a racist act from someone who didn't want the flag to be there or it could be someone who decided they wanted the flag or it could have been mischief and the flag will be dishonoured in some way or put in some ridiculous place," Ms Conway said.
"We may never know."
