The NSW government won't be following Queensland's lead and putting a deadline on the approvals process for a controversial coal seam gas project proposed for the state's north west.
The $3 billion project in Narrabri - proposed by Santos - is still waiting for a determination on its environmental impact statement filed with the NSW Department of Planning and Environment in 2017.
The gas and oil producer on Monday praised the Queensland premier for successfully requesting a timeline for the approvals process for Adani's planned Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin and called for something similar for its proposal.
"I think that's what's been lacking for us as well," Santos chief executive Kevin Gallagher told The Australian.
"We would welcome a timeline being set so we know what we're dealing with."
The NSW Department of Planning and Environment said it was undertaking a "rigorous assessment" of the merits of the Narrabri project.
"There is no deadline for determining the application," a spokeswoman said in a statement to AAP on Monday.
"The application will be referred to the Independent Planning Commission for a final decision."
