You've probably heard about the Five D's of Dodgeball from the popular 2004 movie starring Vince Vaughn and Ben Stiller.

"Watching the ball is the most important thing," St Johns Park High School student Derik Phan said.

"That can be hard when there are multiple balls on the court but that's the challenge."

It's the challenge that drew the Greenfield Park resident to the sport of dodgeball three years ago. And he hasn't looked back.

Known as Young Blood on the court, Derik is a member of the Sydney Storm that compete against the top dodgeball teams in NSW.

He has set his goal on representing the Australian team at the 2020 World Championship Trials.

"I wanted to try something new. I was a bit bored of the mainstream sports like basketball; it was getting a bit repetitive so I wanted a change," the 16-year-old said of his reason for joining dodgeball.

"I like the contact aspect of the sport and trying to hit the target when I have the ball in hand. Initially I wanted to try something new just for leisure but then I became competitive."
