HARDWORKING TEAM: Roy Marando is joined on stage by staff members as he accepts the Business Person of the Year award.

Roy Marando said he was proud and humbled to be named Business Person of the Year at the Fairfield City Local Business Awards presentation night.

"I know it might sound like a cliché but it is truly a testament to my dedicated and hardworking team and without them it would not have been possible," he said.

"I am very fortunate to have them."

That team is the staff at Marando Real Estate South West, an independent, family-owned business which has been operating since 1972.

"Our motto is 'With us it's personal' and we take pride in our level of service," Mr Marando said.

"We have a reputation within the local community which we are proud of and will continue to keep."

Mr Marando said he was surprised to take out one of the major awards even though he believed that if you work hard at anything the rewards will follow.

"When I look at the level of professionalism and the number of business people I look up to and aspire to be, then yes, I must admit I was surprised," he said.

"However, I always believed the possibility to win was there.

"I think the support I have is amazing and It gives me such powerful and energetic motivation to be a good leader and set an example to my staff.

"I am involved in all aspects of the business and prepared to do whatever is necessary to not only succeed, but to also see my team happy and prosperous.

"And I would never expect them to do anything that I am not prepared to do myself."

Mr Marando said he would recommend the awards to anyone considering taking part.

"It's a great atmosphere and a nice way to spend time with your staff outside of work,'' he said.

"It will also give you the opportunity to mix with other business people which is something that you don't usually have time to do.

"You meet new people and it's good to get the recognition for all your hard work and long hours you put into the business."

The real estate principal said he would like to pay special tribute to his wife Julie Bishop.

"She is absolutely amazing: I don't know how she does it," Mr Marando said.

"Not only did she nominate me but the effort and time she spends in our business is incredible.

"Her positive and happy energy is infectious and her care and loyalty to our employees is heart warming.

"Without her, our business would not be where it is today."
