As a midfielder, Mehdi Rizvi likes to be the guy who sets people up for goals.
So when the Bonnyrigg resident scored against Victoria at the recent Under-15 National Championships in Narellan, he made sure the celebration was a good one.
"I don't score too many goals, so it was good to score at the nationals," he said.
The 15-year-old netted while helping the ACT to a fifth place finish at the nationals. He played a season in the nation's capital last year and was selected after trials in November.
When he is not training around Lake Burley Griffin, the Westfields Sports High School student can be found playing for Mounties. He has been somewhat of a lucky charm with grand final wins in the under-15s and 18s in recent years.
Such is his talent, he has been playing in the under-18s since he was 13. He also recently taken up softball with immediate success in earning representative honours as a shortstop
"I like the challenge of playing against the older boys. You can't beat people with just one run because it is so fast and you have to put more work in," he said.
Mehdi is one of several Mounties' hockey players who have had a busy off-season. Natasha Ball, Jade Callander, Aden Smith and Liana Smith all made NSW under-18s team for the national indoor titles and Liana also made the NSW under-18 state team for nationals.
