Smithfield resident Jan Dhu - who has raised more than $100,000 for the Cancer Council through her decade-long participation in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea and Relay For Life events - has been named Fairfield’s 2019 Woman of the Year.
Ms Dhu is the driving force behind the Rainbow Friends Relay for Life team and was recgonised for her passion and commitment towards helping others, tireless advocacy, support and commitment to assisting those in need and her care for the community.
Jan’s inspiration and motivation to fundraise is her sister Pat who passed away from breast cancer.
The memory of her sister has motivated Jan to fundraise vigorously for the provision of a better quality of services and support for those suffering from cancer in the Fairfield area.
“Pat had a long battle with cancer and I have had a lot of friends and family who have had cancer – some have survived, other’s haven’t – so I try to do anything I can to help,” she told the Champion in a previous interview .
“I fundraise in memory of my sister and a lot of friends who have lost their battle with cancer and to celebrate family members and friends who have won their battle.”
Fairfield MP Guy Zangari presented her with the award last week which acknowledges and celebrates the contribution the women of NSW have made to industry and to the community.
“Jan is an inspiration for others in our community. I am extremely grateful for all the work she has done in the Fairfield area and can truly say that the community has benefited enormously from her efforts," he said.
