Charles Borg, principal of Fairfield High School, is driven to make a difference in the future of the lives of his students. Education is the key to a positive future and he is determined that everyone is given a fair chance to succeed.

I believe that being a principal is a great honour and I am in the position to be able to influence the lives of students so that they can access the world as productive citizens.

In a recent conversation about our roles as principals of large, vibrant and progressive schools the three of us agreed that it is the moments when you see students achieve their potential and have a positive impact in the world that are the greatest joy.

When our Alumni contact the school and share with us what they are doing now we have a great sense of pride in our profession. Recently Adel, a student graduating in 1982, let us know that she had just finished writing a book which is being published.

All careers have pressures and challenges and the role of a principal is not exempt from this. Frustration comes from increased administration, negative public perception, resource struggles and complex situations such as dealing with mental health issues.

Like many organisations and companies we are in the midst of rapid change and this too creates immense pressure. This can sometimes distract from the reason we became teachers, and then principals.

Then a student will come to you and talk about their life and what they are learning and we are reminded why we come to work each day. Being a principal does have its challenges and stresses. It is also the best career in the world and I am privileged to be in a position in which each day I am able to make a difference.
