Winning and losing took a back seat to fun and skills at the 2019 Hockey NSW Regional Challenge at the Liverpool City Hockey Complex over the weekend.
More than 3000 players, spectators and volunteers came together for the three-day carnival which saw 950 junior players aged from 11-15 form 100 teams and play in more than 360 round-robin games. The carnival, which draws players from Southern Highlands to the Hunter and New England, is the largest junior event on the Hockey NSW calendar and marks the start of the season for many players. Fun and skill development are the priorities for the players as is promoting citizenship and respect amongst the players. No results are recorded during the weekend. Metro South Scorpions were awarded the champion region of the tournament based on a criteria which included attitude, presentation, teamwork and overall playing style and structure.
Hockey NSW CEO David Thompson said: "The magnitude of this event is something to be marvelled at."
