Climate woes inspire action

The school holidays were a great time to recharge and relax in the community. They were also a time of turbulent weather. From heatwave conditions to hail storms we saw the lot.

It was not surprising to have the question of air conditioning in classrooms raised early in the year. In a perfect world this would be great and in a more perfect world we would address the core cause - climate change. Talking or even writing about climate change needs to be accompanied by action. Like many schools we are collecting and cashing in drink cans and bottles.

Students have been inspired to make a difference in their community. Nikolas in year 7 lobbied for the removal of plastic straws from the canteen. He developed a multimedia presentation and spoke to the whole school at assembly to gain support for his idea. The result of his passion and effort was an instant removal of plastic straws. If one year 7 student can lead this change imagine how great the change would be if we were all on board. Knowing that students can have a voice and create change in the environment has led to a group of year 10 students analysing the environment and developing a complete waste sorting and recycling plan.

Concerns about extremely hot weather and the talk about air-conditioning every classroom will fade as the year progresses. I hope that the concern about climate change does not fade and it stays at the forefront of our thinking and actions.
