Traffic flow is set to be improved on the notorious stretch of Cabramatta Road between Elizabeth Drive at Bonnyrigg and Hume Highway at Cabramatta with new weekend and extended weekday clearways.
The NSW Government-funded proposal would see new and extended clearways would operate in both directions on Cabramatta Road West and Cabramatta Road East from 6am to 7pm on weekdays and from 9am to 6pm on weekends and public holidays.
A Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) spokesman said the proposal would improve journey times for up to 22,000 road users who travel along the busy corridor every day.
“Cabramatta Road is a key east-west arterial road which passes through Cabramatta and connects the Hume Highway at Lansvale to Cumberland Highway at Cabramatta and Elizabeth Drive at Bonnyrigg,” the spokesman said.
“Clearways have positive impacts on traffic flow, as existing road space is used for the movement of vehicles.
“A single parked car can significantly reduce road capacity and cause major delays on busy road corridors so it is important to ensure all lanes are available to improve journey reliability for motorists.”
The spokesman said the RMS has investigated business parking along this corridor and found there is “sufficient” available in side streets, including in the indented parking bay between Lord and Boyd streets and in the section between Cabramatta Road West and John Street near Cabramatta Town Centre.
The spokesperson also confirmed the indented parking bay on Cabramatta Road West in front of businesses between Lord and Boyd streets will remain unchanged.
“The 1/4P and 2P parking in this bay will continue to operate during clearway hours,” the spokesman said.
“Clearways will help improve safety for road users and pedestrians at schools along the corridor. Roads and Maritime will engage with local schools before proceeding with the clearways proposal.”
- The community is invited to provide feedback on the alternate business parking. Feedback can be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org or on 1300 706 232 by September 24.
- The clearways team will be available to discuss the project at Cabramatta Plaza on Thursday, September 20 from 3pm to 6pm.
