Cabramatta to the Mountains | Sydney West Riders swelter as they raise $1600 for homeless kids

In the middle of last Saturday’s gruelling heat 80 motorcyclists rode together from Cabramatta up to the Mountains and raised $1600 for Kids Under Cover

This was the fifth annual Start-of-Year Ride by the Sydney West Riders motorcycle group.

The group’s co-founder Kevin Lam said they did it to help give homeless kids a home.

“You know, the root causes of youth homelessness vary,” he said. “Actually, there are no clear-cut causes.

“But what I do know is that a sense of home is important. It’s a place you return to when things get tough. Losing this can have a detrimental impact on your health and wellbeing.

“Kids Under Cover provides accommodation in the form of studios to youth at risk, plus many other services. Accommodation is more than a Band-Aid. It’s a gift of hope for youths. It provides an opportunity for young people to rebuild and restore their lives and, importantly, keep families together.”

The riders went through Penrith, then on to Springwood and then regrouped for much-needed water at Govetts Leap lookout in the Mountains before making their way to their final stop at the Bilpin Apple Pie Cafe.

Kids Under Cover is a not-profit organisation which started in Melbourne in 1993. They provide secure accommodation for young people at risk, keep families together and provide financial support through scholarships. They focus on early identification of problems and are proactive rather than reactive.

Though not making as much as they hope on the ride, everyone felt a unity of purpose and the day was memorable.

Supporters included Ezviz, Shonky Snapz, Snowfoam, Inspire180 and all the of members of the Sydney West Riders and Ambassadors Motorcycle Club and Bikers Australia motorcycle clubs.

The Sydney West Riders are already planning next year’s Start-of-Year Ride.
