Did you know that rates of preventable chronic disease such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease are two to three times higher in Sydney’s west?

There are a whole range of reasons for this, but one key factor is that we aren’t moving enough on a daily basis.

This month is Walktober, the perfect opportunity for everyone to try and squeeze more activity into their day.

The goal is to move more for at least 30 minutes each day, whether this be through team sports, walking the dog, taking the kids to the park or a leisurely afternoon stroll.

Councils have a key role to play in supporting community health, by providing communities where walking is safe and easy, as well as local parks and sports facilities, and making sure they break down the barriers to participation for everyone.

No matter what your age, interests or abilities, councils are working to ensure everyone has the opportunity to be more active in their day to day lives.

In fact, there are more than 500 parks and sports fields to explore across Fairfield and Liverpool, many with barbecue facilities, walkways, cycle paths, play equipment and dog-off-leash areas.

The south-west is also home to some fantastic specialty facilities such as Aquatopia, Carnes Hill Skate Plaza, Wylde Mountain Bike Trail, Fairfield Park Obstacle Course, a Parkour Park and Whitlam Leisure Centre.

If you haven’t been active in a while then Walktober is the perfect time to get out and explore what’s available in your local area. Your body will thank you for it.

If you really struggle to fit in those extra steps, it’s best to start with some small changes. Try to get outside for a walk during your lunch break; or take the stairs wherever you can, rather than the lift.

When you go shopping park your car on the furthest side of the car park or get off the bus a stop earlier than your usual one and walk that extra bit.

Or try meeting your friends for a walk, rather than a coffee.

Even small steps will add up over the course of the day and can make a big difference to your health.
