Mary Mackillop Catholic College, Wakeley student Lana Balqa was one of three Fairfield students recognied at the annual Archbishop of Sydney Awards for Student Excellence last Friday.
The year 12 students work within the school and parish led to the accolade.
“Lana’s leadership has been shared in refugee forums and is evident in her work as captain of the faith portfolio in the College,” principal Narelle Archer said.
“Her faith, sense of justice and courage are a gift to others.”
Thomas Le from Patrician Brothers’ College, Fairfield and Brianna Fraser from Freeman Catholic College, Bonnyrigg Heights were the others from the local area that were among the 49 year 12 students from Sydney Catholic secondary schools to receive recognition of their contributions to their schools and communities.
The Archbishop of Sydney, Anthony Fisher presented each student with a certificate and medallion at the ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral College.
It was followed by a prayer service at St Mary’s Cathedral.
Sydney Catholic Schools executive director Dan White said: “The students who have received this award in 2017 stand out for their compassion, faith, integrity, leadership skills, strong sense of social justice and commitment to serving others.”
