A year after an injury cruelled their state championship campaign, Isabella Yeomans and Ingrid Norton have won triple gold at the 2017 Gymnastics NSW Senior State Championships.
The acrobatic gymnastics pair, which features nine-year Northmead resident Isabella, won the level six women’s pair category earlier this month by a huge margin of five points.
Having only been paired up for just over a year, the girls were left disappointed when St Leonards resident Ingrid, 15, rolled her ankle the day before last year’s state championships.
Isabella said it made the win even better.
“I knew it’s what happens, you get hurt,” she said.
“You just have to keep going and when it got better, it just made us work harder for this year.”
After winning both routines and the overall point score, Isabella said the pair were “happy and excited” to win gold.
They are now looking forward to their first Australian Gymnastics Championships, where they will compete in early June at Hisense Arena in Melbourne.
Participating at level six, which is the first level gymnasts can compete in nationals, Isabella will be one of the youngest participants in the NSW team.
Isabella’s mum Amy, who is also the pair’s coach, said the girls have performed strongly, with wins in three events so far including two state trials and the state championships.
“We’re going up against groups we haven’t seen yet and the best in Australia,” Mrs Yeomans said.
“It would be nice to get on the podium but overall, it will be a good experience for their first time at a national championships.”
The duo trains three times a week at SXL Gymnastics in Lane Cove and are eager to put their best foot forward at nationals.
“I just need to make sure I keep working hard,” Ingrid said.
Isabella added: “And fix the little things because once you fix the big things, then you can fix the little things and make it even better."
The 2017 Australian Gymnastics Championships will run from May 22 to June 4 at Hisense Arena.
