Artist ups exposure with Block Shop deal

Celeste Wrona is a busy woman.

She’s mother to a young child, teaches art to students and works as a successful abstract artist, selling commissioned pieces.

Now, she’s set to become even busier with her inclusion on TV tie-in website The Block Shop.

The Block Shop features products and brands used on the juggernaut renovation show The Block, and also stocks upstarts that fit their homewares theme.

“I had a few friends tell me that I needed to get my stuff featured in The Block Shop,” she said.

“So I sent off an email and they got back to me really quickly. I’m slowly getting more interest from The Block Shop.”

The artist has spent many years honing her craft.

She studied at the University of New South Wales art branch the College of Fine Arts, where she was originally hooked on drawing, graduating in 2004.

She began teaching the next year.

“I’ve always been interested in creative expression,” she said.

“I was teaching full-time and painting in my own time, but not selling my work.

“There was a part of me that didn’t want to put it out there for people to see, which is something that a lot of artists face.

“You’re putting your heart and soul into your work – what you see is a screen into yourself. Sometimes its difficult to leave that in the open. It’s something I certainly found difficult.”

Ms Wrona, who grew up in Bossley Park and Cecil Hills, describes her work, where she uses inks and acrylics, as “abstract, colourful and fluid”.

She focuses on layers of colours, on taking colours to new levels.

“A lot of what I do looks like water captured still,” she said.

She advises other local artists to put themselves out there.

“Be confident in your work,” she said.

“Students always tell me the idea of other people judging what they have done is scary.

“Be open to listening – listening is a very important part of being an artist, especially if you are doing a commissioned piece.”
