IT was the desire to try something different that led young Canley Vale High School student Zoe Turner to try her hand at fencing.

It's proven to be a wise decision. Her many hours of training and dedication to the sport has seen her claim numerous impressive victories.

To date, at competition she has earned a gold medal as part of the NSW Under 15s squad; a silver as part of the Under 17 years NSW A Team; a bronze in the Under 17 years individual event.

Zoe is also the current Under 15 years Women's Sabre Australian Champion.

What is most extraordinary about the achievements is that Zoe is still technically eligible to be competing in the Under 13 years group.

So skilled is she in the fencing world that she was recently invited to join the Australian training squad.

Her father, Greg, thought it better 'to keep school and sports properly balanced'.

Zoe said that she hoped to keep improving and had already made her 2014 goal, which was to qualify for the national competition.

Zoe said that while she still gets nervous before a competition, her coach has shown her ways of keeping the butterflies at bay.
