Sex charges

A man will appear in Fairfield Court next month, charged with child sex offences allegedly committed in the 1980s. It is alleged a man, then aged 28, had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl in 1981. A 60-year-old man was arrested at a business in Logan, Queensland.

Fire under control

Emergency services were called to Canley Vale last Saturday following reports of a fire. Police said a fire began in the loading dock area of a licenced premises on Bartley Street at 11.50pm. They helped staff in evacuating 100 to 150 patrons. Fire and Rescue NSW attended and extinguished the fire. Police are not treating the blaze as suspicious.

Illegal tobacco trade

Seven businesses including six from Fairfield were raided last Friday as part of an investigation into a counterfeit tobacco trade. Police seized 500,000 sticks of illicit tobacco and about $1 million in cash during the operation. The tobacco and cash were seized during search warrants at seven tobacconists in south-west Sydney including six in Fairfield and one in Bankstown. Other items seized during the raids include more than 70kg of loose leaf tobacco; about 20 credit cards in various names; 164 individual deal bags, which police believe to be synthetic cannabis, and eight packets of Viagra. Police are continuing their investigation and charges are expected to be laid in the coming weeks. Anyone with information on counterfeit goods should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
