FROM red lipstick to kitten heels, Bossley Park's Melissa [surname withheld], aka Belles B Ringing, shone through at the national finals of this year's Miss Pinup Australia competition.

The 33-year-old won the heart of the public throughout the competition, as well as the judges on the night, when she represented NSW in the Miss VaVaVoom section of the vintage pageant.

After receiving most public votes for her performance in her category, Miss Belles B Ringing was crowned Miss Appi Licious 2014 at Hornsby RSL Club on August 2.

The Miss VaVaVoom category comprises women who have a voluptuous curvy body and are a modern dress size of 14-plus.

Entrants must dress, act and present themselves in true 1950s-style.

Miss Belles B Ringing said she was thrilled.

"I am still in shock, I am a national title holder for Miss Pinup Australia," she said.

"One of my mentors Kitty Sapphire (Miss Appi Licious 2013) passed on her title to me and crowned me, which was an extremely proud moment for both of us."

But it wasn't an easy win for Miss Belles B Ringing who found out a week before the event she had gallstones and needed an operation immediately.

"I was extremely lucky I was able to compete as I had a bacteria called Helicobacter pylori, which gave me some extra time as they can't operate on me until that bacteria is killed, so I almost did not make it," she said.

"I had no idea I had already won a title (as voted by the public) so I had to go out in my category of VaVaVoom and give it my absolute best."

Miss Belles B Ringing did four 45-second routines surrounding her theme of strong women.

She competed in clothing categories including daywear (Rosie the mechanic), swimwear (Naval semaphore flag officer), sleep wear (tired nurse) and evening wear (parachuting Bond-style air force woman).

"I also had a one-minute talent so I came out dressed as an old Italian Nonna and talked about Dean Martin with an extremely thick Italian accent," she said.

Miss Belles B Ringing said she would spend the next year mentoring future contestants.

"Western Sydney and Fairfield [have] a few pinups who have been inspired by my journey."
