Speedster Scott Copperfield's magic

A LOT will rest on the young shoulders of Parramatta speedster Scott Copperfield as the grade cricket season approaches. If awards are anything to go by, he's the best man to rely on.

The youngest player in the first grade squad was recently named Player of the Year for 2013/14 at the club's presentation on the back of 565 runs and 43 wickets.

To make the effort even better was the fact the opening bowler was returning from three interrupted seasons with stress fractures in his back and ribs.

"It was a bit of a shock, but I was pretty happy with it," Copperfield said.

"It was my first full season in three years so I was just happy to get through the season."

Despite being the youngest in the squad at 20, The Hills resident said the environment of the side made it easy to adapt to life in the top grade.

"They're a bunch of good guys and being the youngest, they look after you," he said.

The goals are simple for Copperfield, who has also represented NSW under-19s: take more wickets and score more runs.

His confidence with the bat is still high after his 97 not out in the final game of the 2013/14 season against Fairfield Liverpool.

"I learnt a lot about myself during that innings," he said.

"I had to tough it out early on a tricky deck and I learnt about how to be patient and put away the bad balls."
