A MERRYLANDS graphic designer is helping small businesses and start-up companies impress the marketplace with his iPad app.

Jeremy Cassisi's app, Publisher for iPad, enables business owners to create print and social-media ads on their iPads.

The app includes more than 200 templates which can be edited by users and includes business cards, social-media posts and banners, website graphics, posters and letterheads.

Mr Cassisi, 20, said the app helped business owners avoid costly advertising prices.

"I did freelance graphic design before this and I've worked with a lot of small businesses and start-ups and a lot don't have a large budget," he said. "Besides a logo, a lot can't afford to get their business cards done and flyers done when they were starting up."

He designed the app while on the train to and from the University of Technology Sydney where he is studying a bachelor of design in interior spatial degree. It took six months to create and was uploaded to the iTunes store on March 20.

Since its release, the app has reached No.1 on the Australian iTunes store Productivity chart for iPad.

"It's received an overwhelmingly positive response," he said. "It became the No.1 productivity app in Australia in the first week with thousands of downloads in the first few days. It was also in the top 100 in 153 countries and it has a dozen five-star reviews."

He advised emerging app creators to take risks and have original ideas.

"It's quite hard to create a good app unless you have a good idea and a good team behind you," he said. "I failed plenty of times with my first app and other businesses. You shouldn't be afraid to fail or to take risks."

Mr Cassisi hoped the app will expand to T-shirt designs, invitations and flyers.
