Fire forces evacuation

Hundreds of people were evacuated after a fire in a high-rise building in Parramatta's city centre.

The blaze started in an airconditioning unit on the seventh level of the Smith Street building shortly after 10am on Monday.

About 400 people were evacuated from the 14-storey building after internal fire alarms alerted them to the blaze and three fire crews attended.

A NSW Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said the fire generated thick smoke but quickly extinguished itself.

It started in the motor of an airconditioning ducting, she said.

"Crews ventilated the building and used a thermal imaging to check for any further fire spread and there was none," she said.

People were allowed to return to the building about 11.10am. The spokeswoman said the electrical fire did not cause any damage to the building.
