Health project 'saved my life'

Allen Gallard owes his life to Holroyd Council's Healthy Holroyd Project.

The Greystanes resident took the council's Healthy Holroyd medical checklist to the Wentworthville Medical Centre and within four weeks discovered he needed six bypass operations at St Vincent's Hospital.

"The Healthy Holroyd project saved my life," Mr Gallard said.

"I had no signs or symptoms because I was working part-time, and even though I was tired sometimes, I just thought I was old and my age was catching up with me."

Since its implementation in November 2011, the project has become a useful tool for the council to consider ways in which it can deliver health awareness in its community activities.

Mr Gallard said he had enjoyed being part of the project.

"It's not just the exercise that's great about Healthy Holroyd, it's the social interaction, young and old, and there have been some amazing transformations amongst friends," he said.

To add to the council's health initiative, they will hold a free Giant Bootcamp for Healthy Weight Week tomorrow, from 9.30am, at Pendle Hill Park.
