Woman injured during Merrylands robbery

Police are investigating the assault and robbery of a woman at Merrylands last night.

About 9:50pm on Wednesday, a 30-year-old woman was walking along Railway Terrace when she was approached from behind by a man and hit on the head.

As she stumbled the man grabbed at her handbag and the pair became involved in a struggle during which the woman was again struck, sustaining a serious injury to her hand.

The man ran off with her handbag which contained personal items, credit cards and cash.

The injured woman returned home where an ambulance was contacted and she was taken to Westmead Hospital.

Rosehill Local Area Command detectives are investigating the robbery and are looking for a man who has only been described being 175cm tall with a stocky build and wearing shorts and a t-shirt.

A crime scene was established in Railway Terrace and examined by police and specialist forensic officers.

Investigations into the matter are continuing.
