WHEN Meri Zafirova was eight years old her parents asked her if she wanted to start playing sport.

The option of playing soccer was put to her by her father Boban and mother Biljana.

"Meri didn't want to play soccer," Biljana Zafirova said.

"Meri wanted to play tennis. She said soccer was for the boys."

Four years ago, Meri started playing and training at Marconi Tennis Centre. Now 12, the Bossley Park girl has rocketed up the junior rankings and excelled in singles tournaments.

In the past year Meri has risen from No 20 to to No 4 in NSW in age group singles.

Standing 145 centimetres and weighing 35 kilograms, Meri is a pocket rocket around the tennis court who uses her speed and skill to play bigger and physically stronger players. She is coached by Sally Dingwall at Marconi Tennis Centre.
