THE three winners of Fairfield Council's St George Bank Shopping Promotion, held alongside its Lunar New Year celebrations, have been announced.

Poh Chuan Tang won first prize, a $2000 Flight Centre gift card, Phuong Que Thi Bui received second prize, a $500 St George Bank account, and Andy Thai was named the third prize winner, receiving $250 St George Bank account.

The entrants were asked to spend $10 or more at Cabramatta CBD businesses.

Mayor Frank Carbone said it was great to see a competition which supported shopping local in Cabramatta.

St George Cabramatta branch manager Jing Yan said the bank was pleased to get behind the Lunar New Year celebrations by sponsoring the shopping promotion.

Adding to the excitement, the Lunar New Year Festival in Cabramatta recently introduced a new locally made lion to the pack of performers.

Hand made over two years by a local lion dancer, the lion will be used by Cabramatta performers from Dragon Style, Kung Fu and Fitness.

During Sunday's celebrations, Cr Carbone was given the honour of dotting the eyes of the lion to give it sight (pictured above).

It is custom for all new lion heads to undertake an awakening process, known as an eye dotting ceremony, before they can be used.

"It was a privilege to be able to awaken the spirit of this dragon," Cr Carbone said.
