Local athletes compete in Australian Youth Olympic Festival

Junior athletes from across the country have joined international competitors in Sydney for the sixth Australian Youth Olympic Festival.

The biennial competition has drawn 1700 competitors from 30 countries to compete against each other in 17 different sports this week.

Among the local contingent from The Hills is Glenwood badminton representative Buddhima Fernando.

The 17-year-old from Baulkham Hills High School is in action today at Sydney Olympic Park for a place in Sunday's finals competition.

Before leaving for the tournament, Buddhima told the News she was confident of playing well against some of the world's best junior badminton players.

"We'll be in the village all week from Wednesday onwards so I'm looking forward to competing," Buddhima said.

The Hills will also be represented by Kellyville gymnastics duo Dominic Clarke and Kira Ward.

The teammates from Castle Hill RSL Gymnastics Club are considered gold medals and will be in action on Friday.
