MOBILE DINING | Meals on the bus go round and round

Food trucks are gathering momentum across south-west Sydney and a new concept has launched and is set to change the industry with a commercial kitchen on a bus, Busfood Events.

The new meals-on-wheels concept was developed by hospitality businessman Robert Dessanti and business partner Josie Gagliano.

The proud Italians wanted to share their culture and provide good-quality food on the road.

The kitchen is equipped with commercial-grade equipment supported by Electrolux Commercial and made in Pordenone, Italy.

Mr Dessanti played a big part in design. “Busfood Events will revolutionise how guests have their food served, for events, street fairs, launches – in a way you’ve never seen before,” he said. “It was me putting things on paper and we teamed up with a company called Precision Metal and their head engineer oversaw the whole project. We flew over to Italy to chose the equipment ourselves.”

Engineer Marin Lluca said: “From the initial concept to completion took about two and a half months. It’s the first time for something like this. It was challenging but I’ve learnt a lot from it as well.”

The bus was designed to be hired by businesses and could appeal to industries selling products.

“We saw a real need for a brand activation vehicle with a commercial kitchen. We believe it’s nothing like Australia’s seen before. And it’s very purpose-built for any kind of cuisine. We’re determined to let people know it’s not just another food truck. They do have their place in the market but this is different,” Mrs Gagliano said.

“Businesses can hire out Busfood and then it becomes about them and their brand and logo-ing up the outside where we have a TV. We’ve created something for bespoke events. You’ll see Busfood servicing Italian food but we’ll also be in the background when we’re hiring it out. And we’re gearing up for weddings.”

She said it will be based at Wetherill Park. “This bus can be hired and go everywhere around Australia but it’ll be based in south-west Sydney. I’ve been a Fairfield girl all my life and Rob is an adopted Fairfield son now too. We’re proud to be based here and we’ll travel anywhere.”

Some of Busfoods signature dishes will be classic spaghetti bolognese, a “wog roll” and a chicken parmigiana bolognese.
