Fairfield Liverpool are in the box seat to give their finals chances a much needed boost after posting 352 on day one of their clash against Penrith at Rosedale Oval on Saturday.

English import Matt Critchley was the star smashing 149 in the oppressive heat to take his season tally to 468 runs at an average of 58.

The opener produced handy partnerships down the batting line-up with the top eight batsman reaching double figures.

Zach Johns (70 off 69 balls) took advantage of a tired bowling attack in the final session to lift the total beyond 300.

Michael Castle was the pick of the bowlers with 4-58.

The Lions currently sit in 12th place on 24 points but have the advantage of playing four out of their final five games against teams below them on the ladder.

Meanwhile, despite a final round loss to Northern District on Sunday, Fairfield Liverpool’s Poidevin-Gray Shield team has qualified for the quarter finals.

The Lions cubs finished with five wins and two draws from their nine games to finish in eighth place.

They will play first placed Manly-Warringah in the quarter finals on February 11 at Manly Oval.
