The Sydney Thunder are ready to roar for the summer’s Big Bash League.
The 2016 champions this week signed Fairfield Liverpool Lions players Liam Hatcher and Param Uppal ahead of their opening match on December 19.
They join skipper Gurinder Sandhu and long-time Lion stalwart and Cricket Tasmania’s state talent manager Ben Rohrer in the lime green for the tournament.
Uppal, who is captaining the NSW under-19 team this week, is the club’s development rookie for the season – a position occupied by Hatcher last season.
It continues his stellar 2017 which has seen him co-captain the under-19s Australian team, claim his first NSW contract and be selected in the Cricket Australia XI to play in the JLT One-Day Cup.
“It’s really exciting for me to be around the squad with players like Watto [Shane Watson] and Usman [Khawaja], it’ll be a great opportunity for me to learn from the best,” Uppal said
“Being from western Sydney, everyone supports the Thunder. I’ve grown up as a Thunder fan, so for me to now have a chance to mix with the senior squad will be really cool.”
Hatcher and Sandhu took two wickets each in the Lions five wicket loss to Eastern Suburbs on Saturday. Angus Robson (80 not out) top scored for the home team. The loss sees them drop to ninth place after six rounds. This Saturday they host Western Suburbs.
