Joel Taylor started karate when he was five.

Four years later and the Bossley Park resident has his first major tournament medal.

The nine year-old won a bronze medal in the kumite (sparring) at the Karate World Cup held at the Coomera Indoor Sports Centre on the Gold Coast last month.

Joel had to compete in a division comprising more than 60 kids for three straight hours to nab third place. He also made the finals in the kata and finished sixth.

“The weekend was tiring but very rewarding in the end, it was an achievement just to make it to the World Cup and with the added bonus of receiving a bronze medal, it was a dream come true,” Joel said

Joel, who is currently a red belt, trains twice a week at GKR karate at Bossley Park and Hoxton Park, as he works towards a brown belt.

He will compete at the state titles in September.
