Macarthur carers Sarah and Rob love seeing the small changes and growing confidence of children in their emergency and short-term care.
"Their personality emerges and they feel that they matter; they are important and valuable too," Sarah said.
Sarah, aged 43, and Rob, 45, have been carers for 18 years and have looked after many children entering care in crisis situations.
The couple agrees it takes time, patience and a good sense of humour to help children who have experienced trauma and challenges. Sarah said "routine and consistency" were important. "We help them adapt to normal family life," she said.
For Sarah and Rob, CatholicCare's support and training gives them peace of mind that they are working as part of a team and are not on their own. "I've appreciated the availability of a caseworker and the knowledge someone is always available 24/7" she said.
CatholicCare is seeking carers for children needing emergency and short-term care, particularly those aged eight and older and sibling groups. The agency also provides permanent homes for children via guardianship and adoption.
CatholicCare's Executive Manager of Children and Youth Services, Michelle Ferrara, said the valuable work of carers and the hope they bring to children's lives will be celebrated at a dinner and other events during Foster Care Week.
