Steve Irwin, TV's beloved Crocodile Hunter, is set to receive a star on Hollywood's prestigious Walk of Fame.
The Walk of Fame Committee announced the decision on Friday morning, honouring the late nature expert for his "outstanding contribution to the entertainment industry through his wildlife documentaries".
"Steve has always said that he didn't care if anyone remembered him, as long as they remembered his message," Terry Irwin said in a statement from the family's Australia Zoo conservation site in Western Queensland.
"I truly believe that this recognition for Steve's achievements will ensure that his message of wildlife conservation is remembered."
Before his sudden passing in September 2006 while filming an underwater documentary in Queensland's Batt Reef, Irwin was a popular fixture on US television, thanks to his series The Crocodile Hunter and enthusiastic appearances on late night talk shows, including The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.
Besides his popular series, his forays into Hollywood also included cameos in movies like Eddie Murphy's Dr Dolittle 2 and George Miller's Oscar-winning Happy Feet, released weeks after his death.
Irwin's nomination was sponsored by the Queensland tourism campaign, Visit Sunshine Coast.
"This is the most extraordinary moment, honouring Dad's legacy and all that he achieved for global conservation," said daughter Bindi.
"Dad changed the world by reaching out to people through their television screens to bring them on the adventure of a lifetime.
"To have his name on a Hollywood star means the world as we carry on with his important work."
Irwin is being honoured alongside an impressive 2018 class including stars Jack Black, Kirsten Dunst, Jeff Goldblum, Jennifer Lawrence, Snoop Dogg, Weird Al Yankovic and Sir Richard Branson among others.
